CASA of Walker, San Jacinto, and Trinity Counties is accepting applications to train as CASA volunteer advocates until Wednesday, May 22nd, for June training in Huntsville. CASA volunteers make a difference for children who might otherwise slip through the cracks in an overburdened foster care system. Judges appoint an advocate to guide one child or a set of siblings through the system to a safe and permanent home as soon as possible.

The Shiro community invites you to its 44th Annual Shiro Volunteer Fire Department Barbecue Fundraiser on Saturday, May 11th, from 11am to 5pm. This is a fun day for all ages. Barbecue options include ribs, brisket, sausage, and chicken. You can sign up online to reserve a whole brisket or rack of ribs. Kids can enjoy snow cones, face painting, and a petting zoo. Festivities include live music, a car and Jeep show, cornhole, and vendor market. All proceeds go to the new fire station. The department also serves Roans Prairie and Singleton.
