Preparing compassionate physicians care begins with caring for medical students.
A medical student may know the signs. They may understand that eating disorders are serious health conditions rather than lifestyle choices. They may learn how stress, anxiety, depression, body image concerns and perfectionism can affect health. They may even one day help a patient recognize those signs and seek care.
Recognizing those same concerns in themselves or in a classmate, however, can be much more difficult.
That challenge is the focus of a new review authored by SHSU-COM fourth-year student doctors Sarah Mabee, Harrison Blefeld and Wyatt Mayer, along with faculty members Paul Zarutskie, MD, and Owen Kelly, PhD. Their article looks at eating disorder risk among medical students and explains why the issue needs more attention in medical education.
