It’s time again to celebrate General Sam Houston’s birthday. It’s the 44th celebration. Tonight from 5:30 to 7 PM those interested can attend an Evening with Sam at the Bear Bend Cabin on the grounds of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library.
Next, tomorrow morning, the celebration will begin with a reception from 9:15 to 10:15 AM at the Walker County Museum/Gibbs Powell House. Then there’s the traditional march to Sam Houston’s grave site at Oakwood Cemetery at 10 AM. It gets underway at the Old Main Pit next to Austin Hall on the SHSU campus.
The ceremony to honor General Sam Houston, along with the pre-reserved “Baptized a Texan” ceremony, will take place at 11 AM at the grave site of Houston. There will be a pre-reserved luncheon at noon in the Katy & E. Don Walker Education Center with guest speaker Mac Woodward. Following the luncheon, at the center there will be a “Toast to Texas” with birthday cake. Those interested can visit the Sam Houston Memorial Museum free of charge on March 1st and 2nd.
