Community Impact reports that the sale of the Sam Houston Elementary school building for $4.3 million to Overland Property Group was approved during the Conroe City Council’s January 6th special meeting.
According to the item on the agenda, Overland Property is planning a conversion of the school into a moderate-income, multifamily rental housing development to be called Landmark 601.
Assistant City Administrator Nancy Mikeska said the sale is contingent on whether Overland Property can secure a grant to provide project funds. If there is no grant, the building will not be purchased by them.
Two bids for the property were received by the city. The sale to Overland Property was recommended by the city staff.
In 2021, city officials bought the school from Conroe ISD. The city had intended to create a performing arts facility with the building, but lack of money prevented the purchase.
During a council meeting on November 14th the council approved of listing the property.
In February of 2024, the school was originally set to be purchased by Overland Property, but the company withdrew its offer after concern from the community.
