Community Impact reports that, during their December 12th Conroe City Council session, Paul Sims was named as the city’s new fire chief.
Former Fire chief Ken Kreger had retired in July.
The position was advertised locally and nationwide and through the city’s website, job boards and other avenues, according to Conroe’s Human Resource Director Andre Houser.
Houser said there were 35 applicants originally who met the minimum qualifications. The number of applicants was reduced to five after a committee reviewed the candidates. The number was next reduced to three they wanted to interview, and one dropped out, making it “two highly qualified tenants” before the final choice was made.
The search committee was made up of Mayor Duke Coon, Houser, City Councilmembers Shana Arthur and Howard Wood, Assistant City Administrator Nancy Mikeska and City Administrator Gary Scott.
Serving as assistant chief, Sims comes to Conroe from Montgomery County Emergency Services District No.9. Sims formerly worked at the Conroe Fire Department for 28 years. In Harker Heights he served as fire chief.
Sims father was a former Conroe firefighter.
