The Courier of Montgomery County reports that Conroe ISD has approved using part of their $1.9 billion bond referendum money to fund over $100 million in renovations for five campuses. The bond was approved last year by voters.
New schools will take up around $1 billion of the bond funds, while $132 million will be used for major renovations. New buses and bus infrastructure has been allocated over $22 million.
Bond money totaling $595 million has been issued by the district, getting dozens of projects underway. The board approved assigning $89 million in bond funds in February to construct two new elementary schools.
The projects were needed for schools and would provide additional space to the campuses that are already over capacity, according to District Assistant Superintendent Chris McCord.
For gym and classroom additions, site improvements and interior renovations, Ford and Creighton elementary projects come to $43.8 million.
Exemplifying the need for more classrooms at the campus, McCord said they ended May with “120 percent capacity at Ford.”
A total of $39.7 million will be used for renovations for a gym, classroom additions, interior renovation and site improvements at Hailey and Buckalew elementary campuses. Work will be getting underway next month.
Renovations at Knox Junior High School will cost $23.8 million. Included in the renovation, according to McCord, will be new flooring, new paint, infrastructure renovations and a generator. He said November bond funds allow all campuses to have generators.
