The Huntsville Item reports that 34-year-old Richard Alan Curlee was found guilty in 12th District Court last week for Continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14. He was sentenced to two life sentences.
A jury was empaneled on May 7th for the sentencing phase of the trial. However, on Friday, May 10th, the trial proceedings were stopped when, in a bathroom stall at the courthouse, Curlee shot himself.
As of press time for the story Wednesday afternoon, Curlee was in the custody of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, as he remained in hospital care.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
