The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the parents of 15-year-old Brodie Bell, Michael and Sarah, want to give their son as much of an independent life as possible. Brodie has Duchenne muscular dystrophy,
Nearing sixteen, Brodie will be a sophomore at Conroe High School. He hopes to get a job, learn to drive and help with cooking and doing the dishes at home.
The new Conroe nonprofit Honor Up is hosting a fundraiser to help the Bell family buy a motorized, standing-assist wheelchair. The fundraiser is scheduled for 5 PM Saturday at Honor Cafe at 103 North Thompson Street in Conroe. There will be a Cajun-style meal served. A live and silent auction will also be held. The wheelchair that will help Brodie costs $54,000.
U.S. Marine Corps veteran Chris Sadler owns the cafe, which is a veteran and military themed restaurant. Sadler organized the Honor-Up group with the aid of members of the community to offer support to veterans and their families. This weekend’s fundraiser is their first.
Brodie’s father Michael is a recruiter at Conroe’s U.S. Army Recruiting Station. The family lives in a rental home which keeps them from making any permanent adjustments. Brodie likes to cook, and the standing-assist wheelchair would give him better mobility in the kitchen and other situations. He also likes working with his parents in their business Rough and Ready Flags.
