Community Impact reports that in introducing a VFW post to Montgomery County’s west side, the Birthplace of the Lone Star Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12223 held their grand opening for the post July 1st at the Lone Star Community Center in Montgomery.
The purpose of the new VFW post is to become involved in the community, that according to Third-year Trustee Ruben Borjas, Jr. This involvement includes Willis ISD and Montgomery ISD schools by way of the Patriotism Program—a program that teaches the principles and ideals of U.S. history. Michael John-Foy Day is commander of the post.
Borjas, also being a member of both the Montgomery Historical Society and VFW, said he plans to combine events involving the two organizations in the future.
Mr. Borjas also passed along that the local post will also be joining with Montgomery and Willis for the recognition of police and firefighters. They will sponsor troops to honor Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He also said in order to raise funds for programs to serve the community, the post will have fundraisers by cooking and selling hot dogs, barbecue and hamburgers.
Additionally he said, “Our VFW will have a strong commitment to Montgomery and Willis’ elderly, and aging and homeless veteran populations.”
