The Courier of Montgomery County reports that although there are funding challenges, the staff at Montgomery ISD will get raises for the upcoming school year as their share of the district’s $87.8 million budget.
On Tuesday, the district adopted their 2023-24 budget which offers a $1,300 raise for members of the staff on the district’s teacher hiring schedule. Regarding other employees, there will be a 2 percent salary raise from the midpoint of their pay grade. There will also be an increase in pay for substitutes.
Looking back to 2022-23 teachers picked up a $2,000 increase, and the remainder of the staff got a 3 percent raise.
Over $71 million dollars, or around 81 percent of the new budget is for salaries and benefits. For teacher supplies, teacher aids and teachers there’s around 63 percent dedicated from the budget.
According to officials, the district expects to benefit from a surplus of more than $54,000. Superintendent Heath Morrison said there is some hopeful anticipation of more funding from the legislature after they received a $33 billion surplus.
An alternative compensation plan for pay increases at mid-year for employees was approved by officials. This will happen if the district is allocated additional funding from the legislature.
Superintendent Morrison said, “This year, we received no new funding for raises, but we understand the importance of offering competitive compensation to attract and retain high-quality teachers and staff.”
