Community Impact reports a shared-use path project on Alligator Creek is being considered by the City of Conroe.
Pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure ranked second in concerns after traffic congestion back in August of 2021 when Conroe put together a 2040 comprehensive plan. So, it follows that the city is looking to create pedestrian connectivity in Conroe. Putting a 10-foot wide shared use path along Alligator Creek would be part of that effort.
Once the trail gets funding, City Engineer Chris Bogert says it will be 8 to 10 feet wide. The trail would begin at Sgt. Ed Holcomb Boulevard and go from South Loop 336 West to FM 2854. The trail would also run on Old Magnolia Road from Sgt. Ed Holcomb Boulevard to 200 feet north of Kirk Road.
A 14-foot wide pedestrian bike bridge that will go along Sgt. Ed Holcomb Boulevard will also be added.
According to Bogert, the project will come in at around $5 million.
Bogert said back during a May 11th council session that the council gave the go-ahead for the engineering department to apply for grants from TxDOT to fund the Trail. The City looked to submitting the grant by June 5. Bogert also said that until it gets funding the project is in a conceptual phase.
If approved for grant funding, Project Manager Raphael Carrasquillo said the project will move toward being built.
If no TxDOT funding is received, Bogert said Conroe will seek additional grants or put the project on hold until it will fit into a future Capital Improvement Project fund.
