According to the Courier of Montgomery County the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Commission, a nonprofit group that takes care of the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park in Conroe, is looking to honor World War II and Korean War veterans in the county with its Operation Silver Program.
Commission board member and project coordinator, Trish Almond, says World War II veterans average age is in the late eighties or early nineties. She passed along that our state has only around 8,200 veterans still around.
In Operation Silver, commission members make visits to area assisted living facilities and bestow a certificate of appreciation and a special challenge coin from the commission to the veteran.
Also, by means of a sponsorship, the commission is working to get as many veterans from World War II on “The Line” monument as they can.
“The Line” monument in the Veterans Memorial Park has panels which feature the names of veterans from across America. Veterans’ names placed on “The Line” may be from a veteran of the various conflicts beginning with Texas’ battle for Independence through today.
