Community Impact reports that as Conroe and Montgomery parks and recreation programs grow, the cities of Montgomery and Conroe are enlarging facilities and making new recreational programs available for residents.
To provide recreational space to residents of Conroe’s west side, the Owen Park and Westside Recreation Center opened in January off of Owens Drive. According to Conroe Finance Director Collin Boothe, project has been moving forward since the city bought the former site of the YMCA in 2021 for $2.5 million.
Looking at Montgomery County, a new post was approved for 2022-23 for the city’s first events and recreation specialist. Patricia Campuzano was hired for the job in November. More recreation programs will be added in the future.
Montgomery Precinct #2 Commissioner Charlie Riley, who is working for more outdoor recreation space, said that Johnson Development, the company that developed Woodforest, gave 391 acres of land to the County in 2021 as the land is in a flood plain now allowable for commercial development. Montgomery County is planning to use the land as a recreational site.
This year, Conroe added a recreation specialist at a cost of around $76,000, in light of their program’s growth.
Other growth in Conroe and Montgomery’s recreational programs are also underway.
