After a September fire destroyed two buildings and severely damaged another, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library is taking its first steps toward recovery, aiming to raise $500,000 to rebuild.
What began as a devastating loss on September 23rd has become an opportunity for the university. The Huntsville community and supporters of Texas history from across the state are coming together to help restore an important piece of the museum’s operations.
A fire on the museum’s grounds destroyed the pottery shed and glass blower shed and severely damaged the woodworking workshop. Thanks to the quick response of local fire departments and law enforcement, the fire was contained before reaching the nearby historic buildings and collections.
Rebuilding the facilities lost in the fire will require significant resources and support from those who believe in the museum’s mission.
To help meet that need, SHSU Annual Giving is preparing a crowdfunding campaign with a $500,000 goal to support the rebuilding effort.
