The Courier of Montgomery County reports that on Saturday the first to sign a petition to put the use of automatic license plate readers on a future ballot were Conroe City Council Members Shana Arthur and David Hairel.
The best way to end the debate over Flock safety cameras, according to Arthur, is to let residents vote. She says she sees “both sides.” She added, “Let’s take a vote.”
Hairel passed along that he supported the effort.
Over the past few months, controversy over the Flock cameras has gotten stronger in the Houston area and across Texas.
Privacy concerns are raised by opponents, as there are allegations that the system is misused by law enforcement
Cases in which cameras helped identify and locate violent crime suspects is the view expressed by proponents.
Leading the campaign to gather around 1,300 signatures to submit a citizen-drafted ordinance calling for an election is James Fletes.
They have 45 days to collect the signature, according to Fletes. If the effort is successful, the city could be mandated to run a special election on the issue. The cost of an election could be over $200,000.
