Community Impact reports that on October 8th the Conroe City Council held initial discussions about the idea of bringing back its planning commission to create a more thorough review before documents for development proposals seek final approval.
The City Council in a narrow vote in July 2025 voted to dissolve the planning commission they had.
Councilmembers discussed instead of making recommendations to the city for final approval over variances, the commission should just make recommendations to the city for final approval.
The councilmember who brought forth the proposal, Shana Arthur, said she doesn’t want to bring back a planning commission “that simply meets for 15 minutes and rubber stamps a development.” She emphasized that the commission would help the city “prepare for the consequences of development.”
She said she wants commissioners “who look at the bigger picture” and how growth effects infrastructure.
She also suggested that in order for commissioners to understand Conroe’s ordinances about development that the city would train them.
Commissioners would no longer be paid. There would be seven members.
It was not stated by council members when they may vote on a reinstatement of the planning commission.
