You’re driving to work, half-listening to the radio, when a jingle or a news headline plays. Hours later, you’re still humming the tune or repeating the fact to a coworker. That’s not a coincidence — it’s how the brain is wired to process sound, and it’s a big part of why radio remains one of the most effective and trusted media out there.
How the Brain Encodes What It Hears
Memory researchers describe two main ways we recognize and recall an ad or message later: recall, where you actively retrieve the memory on your own, and recognition, where you simply know you’ve heard it before. Both depend heavily on attention — the more cognitive resources a message captures while it’s playing, the more likely it is to be encoded into memory.
Radio has a structural advantage here. Because it’s audio-only, listeners aren’t splitting focus between a screen and a voice — they build a mental picture from sound alone. Studies on radio promos have found that certain audio production techniques (things like sound effects, voice changes, or pacing shifts) naturally prompt the brain to allocate more attention to encoding a message, which in turn improves recognition and free recall of that content later on.
This “theater of the mind” effect also appears to carry over into other media. In one study, people who first heard an ad on the radio, then later saw the same ad on TV, spent more time looking at the brand and were more engaged than people who saw the TV ad cold. The radio exposure primed their imagination, priming better memory and recall of the ad content across screens.
I got a firsthand look at just how actively listeners’ brains fill in the blanks a while back, when a listener called our station, fairly alarmed. He’d been listening to the morning show and caught something about a cat and a taco truck, and he was convinced — for a moment, anyway — that our DJs were joking about a taco truck cooking cats. Naturally, they weren’t. What he’d actually heard was our Pet of the Week segment with a local animal shelter, followed by a commercial break that happened to include a spot for a nearby food truck park. Two separate, unrelated pieces of audio, stitched together in his head into one very memorable (and very wrong) story.
It’s a funny example, but it’s also a perfect illustration of the research: because radio gives listeners nothing to look at, their brains work to construct meaning out of what they hear, sometimes connecting details that were never meant to go together. The upside is that this same active construction is what makes radio content so sticky in the first place — that listener remembered the segment well enough to call in and ask about it. The mental effort that occasionally produces a mixed-up mental image is the same mental effort that makes an ad, a story, or a call-in moment memorable in the first place.
Radio vs. Screen-Based Ads
Because radio removes visual clutter, it may actually encode messages more efficiently than TV in some cases. A 2014 neuroscience study from iHeartMedia and Neuro-Insight, which used brain-imaging technology to measure “Memory Encoding” (a metric linked to consumer choice and purchase behavior), found that radio ads outperformed TV ads on that measure in seven of eight paired campaigns tested, and that radio converted listener engagement into memory more effectively than television did during ad breaks.
Frequency matters too, but maybe not as much as you’d think. A large-scale analysis of over 1,100 radio campaigns found that creative quality and ad format had more influence on recall than simply repeating the ad more often — putting the “optimal” frequency range at about 4 to 17 exposures, with 7 being the sweet spot.
Why That Retention Translates Into Trust
None of this would matter much if listeners didn’t trust what they were hearing. And by most measures, they do. A 2024 Katz Radio Group survey found that nearly 8 in 10 U.S. adults rated radio as trustworthy or very trustworthy — ahead of newspapers, TV, and magazines, and about three times the trust level given to social media. A separate Morning Consult survey that same year found AM/FM radio trust had climbed to 63%, again outpacing newspapers and social media. Audacy’s 2024 study of local news radio listeners similarly found that 85% consider local radio news credible — more than any other medium tested.
That combination — a format that’s built for attentive listening and a medium people already trust — helps explain why information delivered over the radio tends to stick. Listeners aren’t just hearing it; they’re engaging with it, forming mental images around it, and filing it away as coming from a source they believe.
The Takeaway
Radio’s staying power isn’t just nostalgia. It’s backed by how human memory actually works: audio-only content demands more active mental construction, well-produced audio cues boost attention and encoding, and repeated, trusted exposure over time turns a passing broadcast into something a listener genuinely remembers — and believes.
