The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the Conroe Noon Lions Club, in the middle of its service year, is showing continued community commitment. They are offering wide-ranging service projects in Conroe while helping out humanitarian efforts throughout the world. Their theme this year is “Taking it to the Next Level.”
Lions-led philanthropic activities have been supported by local business partners who have given $199,000. The funds help provide money for programs that address youth development, health, inclusion and community well-being.
Lions volunteers have directly impacted 30,000 individuals and families in Montgomery County and beyond utilizing 6,600 volunteer hours across 70 service projects.
A fundamental corner stone of their service is vision care through the Conroe Noon Lions Club Eye Recycling Center, a facility that manufactures new prescription glasses while refurbishing and repairing donated eyeglasses to distribute to people in need across the globe. Lions volunteers this year held vision screenings for 450 local preschool children and helped in providing eye examinations and glasses for 35 students to families in need. This combination of local help and world-wide outreach is an example of the Lion’s efforts to help bring sight and step-up the quality of life across generations and borders.
To help support area hospitals and emergency needs, the club has had a blood drive which collected 25 units of blood. In addition, the Lions have a “Service Saturday” which provided partnerships with Reaves Elementary School, a Healthy Kids Fair, and holiday decorating at New Danville.
The club’s “Kids on the Lake” program is a yearly fishing event that provides disabled children and their families a day of outdoor enjoyment and connection. The event provided fishing fun for 72 children and caregivers, with support from 28 volunteers and community sponsors.
A major endeavor this year has been the fast growth of Conroe Leo Club, which is a service organization for secondary school students. The club now has over 70 members. They are preparing a new group of civic leaders who are committed to local and worldwide service. The members of the group have taken part in many service activities which gives rise to a strong following of future Lions and community advocates.
