The Courier of Montgomery County reports that according to a study from SmartAsset, the personal finance website, Conroe ranks No. 16 in the nation for median property tax burdens as a percentage of median local household income.
In Conroe, SmartAsset found the median income of households with a mortgage is $114,220. With a median annual property tax of $5,866, it means the community has a median property tax burden of 5.1% of income.
Ranking as the nation’s No. 21 tax hot spot, Pearland comes in just behind Conroe. Homeowners in Pearland pay median annual property taxes of $8,251 when compared to a median income of $166,351 for households with a mortgage. This represents a 5% of income median property tax burden.
The Woodlands township, if you look solely at median annual property taxes paid, ranks No. 1 in Texas and No. 7 in the U.S. The median annual outlay is $8,734.
There is a relatively high household income in The Woodlands. For people with a mortgage it’s just above $200,000. That comes to 4.4% as a share of income.
Houston has a median property tax of 4.1 % of household income.
In growing Texas communities, in the state’s largest metropolitan areas, the communities stand out for high property taxes. In cities like Pearland and Conroe, large population growth has the effect of raising public spending on infrastructure as well as pushing up property values.
