The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the Crighton Theatre in Conroe will not be operating this month while it gets a renovation and new seating.
Orange plush fabric seats were put into place in 1979 at the theatre’s reopening. It originally opened in 1935. In addition to the new chairs, work is underway on redoing the floor and installing carpets.
On February 6th the theatre will have its reopening featuring 520 new seats. “Of Mice and Men,” a Stage Right production, will run weekends through February 22nd.
Conroe Mayor Harry M. Crighton built the theatre in 1934. It was closed at one point in time and needed repair before a group of concerned Conroe citizens got together for the 1979 major renovation.
The lobby was expanded in 2020 into the Muse Building next door. Additional restrooms were put in place downstairs.
Executive Director for the Crighton, Melody Montez, said the board has chosen a wood-backed seat with a red velvet type material covering the chair in order to go with the theatre’s main curtain which is red.
A campaign to raise money to pay for the seats took place in November of 2024. The cost is a bit over $400,000 for the flooring and seating. Local donors greatly supported the project.
Those patrons who wish to sponsor a seat may do so. Sponsorships are $2,500 for the six middle rows of the orchestra level. Remaining areas of the orchestra area go for $1,000. $500 gets one seat in the balcony.
Contact the box office at 936-441-7469 to sponsor a seat, or email at info@crightontheatre.org.
