KHOU reports that TDCJ said an inmate who escaped early Sunday morning from the Huntsville Unit had been recaptured west of Corpus Christi in Calallen.
The escapee, 39-year-old Jesus Villareal, is serving time on four counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of aggravated assault out of Cameron County. He is serving a 63-year sentence. Back in 2015 he was also charged with possession of a deadly weapon. Now he will also be charged with felony escape, as well.
A TDCJ public information officer reported they think the inmate went down a wall of the prison through the use of a rope. Following his escape, he went to a nearby gas station and took an employees keys to a car he used to escape.
Later, the vehicle was seen in a parking lot in Calallen. The OIG and U.S. Marshall Service Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force took Villareal into custody.
In association with Villareal’s escape, Melissa Lozano was taking into custody for hindering apprehension.
TDCJ is investigating and will review their policies.
