The Courier of Montgomery County recently did an update on the Montgomery County Historical Commission. The commission isn’t a non-profit organization. It is affiliated with and answerable to the Commissioners Court and the Texas Historical Commission. However, the Montgomery County Historical Society, Montgomery County Genealogy and Heritage Museum are nonprofits they engage with.
The commission’s chairman is Larry Foerster, a Conroe attorney.
Commission members receive an appointment for two-year terms. As of the first of the year, they have 38 members. The commission meets every other month at the Greater Conroe-Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce at 505 West Davis. On May 6th they will meet at 6 PM.
Volunteers in the organization work on county preservation projects. An example is Frank and Merlynn Hersom, who along with their LDS church members, have been working on a digitally updated Historical Resource survey to shine a light on the sites and buildings in the county that are historically significant.
Another example of the commission’s work includes restoring the Thomas Chapel United Methodist Church. Established in the 19th century, it is a Black church in Willis.
Volunteers also carry out a historical marker program.
