Community Impact reports that in an April 2nd workshop meeting, Conroe ISD trustees talked about the district’s preliminary budgeting and the 2024-25 health care plan for employees, in addition to a shortfall projection of $17.72 million. The large amount was more than was projected previously.
At the workshop, a review of the budget and an employee health plan update were passed along by Chief Financial Officer Darrin Rice and Director of Finance Karen Garza.
In the preliminary numbers, the estimated expenditure was $712.82 million with a total revenue estimated at only $695.1 million, thus the projected shortfall of $17.72 million. Officials say this projected shortfall is equal, financially, to around 200 positions.
Garza said, the preliminary budget predicts the district will find itself $10 million short of its $142.6 million target fund balance. Rice said in regard to its fund balance that CISD wants to retain 20% in reserve, but the projected fund balance for the preliminary budget of $132.6 million is 18.6 percent.
Garza pointed out that, “This is what we knew it was going to look like when we approved the teacher increase in November.”
The only real option, according to Superintendent Curtis Null, that will increase funding for more revenue, is a voter-approval tax rate election.
