The Montgomery County Courier reports that security technology to let parents and teachers keep track of bus-riding students is being introduced by Conroe ISD.
Called the SMART Tag system, a student bus rider’s card is scanned when they get on and off the bus. Parents can opt to sign up for notifications to be alerted when the child’s morning bus arrives for pickup and then they exit the bus in the afternoon. When and where a student boards or leaves a bus is also recorded by the system.
Assistant superintendent of Operations for Conroe ISD Chris McCord said,”It’s a real problem if a student gets off at the wrong bus stop.” He said there are 320 bus routes, and 40,000 students take the bus. He said it keeps those who aren’t enrolled at CISD from gaining access to the buses.
McCord said, “Over the next several weeks,” the SMART Tag ID cards will be given out to students. He added, other than their name, the ID card does not contain any personal information.
Director of Communications, Sarah Blakelock, said full implementation is expected by May.
