The Courier of Montgomery County reports that an offer of work-from-home schedules is being considered by the Conroe ISD Board of Trustees as an incentive to retain and hire employees because of a growth in vacancies in their special education department.
According to district special education department director Kendra Wiggins, their department has 20 vacancies mostly for speech-language pathologists.
Ms. Wiggins said low pay is the reason for the difficulty in filling the positions. Speech pathologists are seeking more pay in the medical field. So, she said, the services have to be contracted for which costs Conroe ISD “millions of dollars.”
After visiting with staff, Trustee Misty Odenweller said the staff spends up to seven hours a day in meetings. She suggested hiring facilitators for meetings.
Ms. Wiggins said her survey of workers showed a need for more pay, private work areas and clerical help.
Superintendent Null will look at incentives for flexible work schedules and work-from-home days. However, he said regarding increasing staff, pay and space, “We can’t do that right away, and we will have to work through that during our budget.”
