The Courier of Walker County reports that the Willis Independent School District has successfully moved in an upward direction in hiring. Among their 11,000 employees, there are 500 teachers.
Since December, they’ve hired 27 teachers out of 70 positions.
Superintendent Tim Harkrider believes Willis ISD’s “work culture” is behind good staff retention.
He believes the key for retention is “feeling valued and supported by your leader.” This would include at the director or campus level.
There have been bonuses, too. The professional staff got a $1,500 bonus in December, while the hourly staff received $1,000. Looking ahead, it is expected that come September the staff will receive a bonus between $1,500 to $2,500.
Superintendent Harkrider also passed along that in April the district will have a career fair.
