HUNTSVILLE ISD SUPT. DR. SCOTT SHEPPARD ON TARGETED INTERVENTION PLANS

Huntsville ISD recently had a public hearing on Targeted Intervention Plans for the District which are a requirement of the Texas Education Agency.

In a recent conversation with Huntsville ISD Superintendent Dr. Scott Sheppard, he explained what was underway . . . .

BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL SATURDAY

The 9th Annual Butterfly Festival is coming up tomorrow, October 13th, at 101 Tam Road from 10 AM to 2 PM. It’s sponsored by the Walker County Master Gardeners. Tag and Release of Monarchs will occur at noon. They will have a children’s area with face painting, new crafts, outdoor games, photo spots and Bug Bingo. The Seed Ladies will be there. Walker County Beekeepers will be there so you can learn about keeping bees and how honey is made.

UPDATE HURRICANE MICHAEL

Former Hurricane Michael made landfall on the Florida Panhandle Wednesday afternoon. It was classified as one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the U-S. Weakening over land, it turned into a tropical storm by late Wednesday.

It brought in maximum winds of 155 miles-per-hour when it came ashore near Mexico Beach in Florida. Debris has been scattered across miles of the coastline of Florida. It left in its wake damaged roofs and downed trees and power lines.

Almost 300,000 homes and businesses have lost power in Florida. Thousands of homes in Georgia and Alabama also lost power.

HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY DISCUSSES UPCOMING MID-TERM ELECTIONS

Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee about Homeland Security Threats.

With the mid-terms ahead in a few weeks, one of the vulnerable areas focused on were the November elections.

Secretary Nielsen addressed the committee on what was being done to address security in the upcoming elections . . . .

POLICE NEWS

In Huntsville Police news, on the day shift Tuesday an unknown suspect passed forged checks in the 1200 block of Josey Street. In the 100 block of Northbound I-45 an unknown suspect threatened a public servant. In the 600 block of University Avenue, a known suspect threatened to cause serious bodily injury to another.

On the night shift Tuesday, a motorcycle was stolen in the 2000 block of 19th Street. At the corner of Montgomery Road and Sam Houston Avenue, Bethany Portela was arrested for DWI and possession of a controlled substance.
