Community Impact reports that officials from Willis ISD listened to the concerns and needs of parents regarding rezoning and resources for the district’s new middle school, Homer C. Calfee Middle School, during a January 23rd meeting.
Parents at the town hall aired their concerns and wishes regarding the resources at the Calfee school in terms of offerings of the same programs across schools, equitable resource distribution and the balancing of experienced and inexperienced teachers.
Superintendent Kimberly James said decisions on staffing will be based on the school’s enrollment number. The aim is for 25 to 27 students for each class. Other issues centered on transportation services.
Discerning everyone’s views in a low-stakes environment like a town hall is important, according to James.
According to Communications Director Jamie Fails, it could be as early as February when Population and Survey Analysts present the proposed rezoning boundaries at an upcoming meeting.
Fails said, if “the board likes what they see, and they vote,” the result will be the attendance boundary.
Willis ISD will get a depiction of the current population of Willis and Conroe from Populations and Survey Analysts which will determine which addresses fall into the middle school. She said the report will give them a list of “all the new developers that are building homes and neighborhoods.” It will also given them an idea of the number of homes that will be in a neighborhood and a look at growth.
A portion of northern Conroe is serviced by WISD and parts of that area are under a temporary development moratorium because of lack of water. Fails said that could have an impact on their growth.
The name of the middle school, Homer C. Calfee, is derived from the original land owners who sold the land to the district. According to district officials, the opening of the school is planned for August.
