The Walker County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning to residents regarding a recent increase in telephone scam activities targeting individuals in our community.
In these instances, the scammers typically have been employing tactics such as:
• Claiming to be from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office or other government entities, threatening legal action or arrest if immediate payment is not made.
• Using spoofed telephone numbers with call recording representing the agency.
• Using intimidation or urgency to pressure victims into making hasty decisions without verifying the legitimacy of the caller.
Here are some tips to help protect yourself:
1. Verify the Caller: If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and independently verify the caller’s identity by contacting the company or agency directly using a trusted phone number.
2. Do Not Share Personal Information.
3. Be Skeptical of Urgency or Threats.
4. Report Suspected Scams.
