Community Impact reports that after a backlog of record-setting protests and homestead exemptions, Montgomery County taxing institutions found themselves losing more than $8.4 billion in property value for 2022-23.
The lost taxes could mean higher tax bills for Montgomery County residents and have an effect on funds for schools as a result of what the Texas Comptroller found.
Montgomery Central Appraisal District’s Chief Appraiser, Janet Jennings-Doyle, said the potential money loss was caused by shortages in staff and increases in new exemptions.
She passed along that the appraisal district will be more “aggressive” in the future in order recompense them for the lost property value, which include updates to their two-decade-old computer equipment, while increasing protests and exemptions move to keep taxable values down.
