The Courier of Montgomery County reports that Conroe residents may have solar and wind energy systems installed on their homes, as the city council has now granted approval through an ordinance.
A new ordinance, according to City Attorney Michael Garner, will set up a permitting process for the devices and the required distance to neighboring homes.
Garner passed along that one important part of the ordinance regarded the kind of structures the systems may be used on and preventing big solar and wind farms.
In an August 9th workshop, Garner told the council there will be restrictions regarding distancing between primary and secondary structures to avoid having large solar and wind properties, so the wind and solar devices will be limited to only providing power for the “structures on the property.”
Councilmember Howard Wood said some companies have looked at Conroe in terms of a place to develop solar farms, so he asked the city’s legal department to come up with an ordinance. He looked at it as a “proactive” step of environmental protection.
Residential solar units in Montgomery County exist. However, no wind or solar farms are in the county.
