Our guest on our “Around Town” public affairs program over the weekend was the new Director of the Walker County Economic Development Corporation, Stephanie Smith.
We asked her, “How do you read the economy in Huntsville?” She said, she did an assessment before she applied for her job. She said, “I learned that the cost of living is below the national average, which is absolutely great. But the household income and the wage is also below the national average and that’s due largely in part to the fact that the economy has been sustained by two industries—TDCJ and education, neither which pay taxes.”
