Community Impact reports that beginning on December 1st the City of Conroe will charge multifamily complexes higher water and sewer rates. The increase stems from city council approved changes to rates on September 26th.
Assistant City Administrator and Director of Finance, Collin Boothe, said the new rates will charge multifamily units at 90% of the single family rates, with volumetric water charges based on a per-unit basis.
Since it’s based on the number of units and water usage, the impact to apartment owners will vary.
Water and sewer service base rates include 0 to 3,000 gallons. According to Boothe, 2,900 gallons a month is the average usage for multifamily complexes.
Multifamily complexes with 354 units will start on December 1st to go from paying $38.36 to $61.74 for the standard rate for 3,000 gallons. This is a 61% increase when compared to last fiscal year rates.
Every year in order to determine if the current rates are adequate to fund the infrastructure system, the city commissions a water and sewer rate study.
Although leaving the choice to owners, the city would prefer apartment owners cover the increase rather than passing it on to tenants.
