The Courier of Montgomery County reports that, as the city of Montgomery continues to contend with growth, local voters will soon be deciding if elected officials will serve four years, as opposed to two-year terms.
Councilmembers, during an October workshop meeting said they found it difficult to accomplish a lot of work because of the growth the city had experienced. They’ve also spent almost a year evaluating whether they should extend the terms for councilmembers and the mayor to three or four years from the current term of two years.
Officials say, as the city continues to grow, they can’t accomplish enough work with two-year terms.
Mayor Sara Countryman said that because there’s not as much change in a four-year term, issues can be seen through to their accomplishment. There’s more “legacy” to guide new councilmembers.
