Community Impact reports that the Montgomery City Council okayed an ordinance at it’s July 23rd meeting approving a budget for a crime control and prevention district. It is for two fiscal years 2024-25 and 2025-26.
The goal of the district is to allow for expanding investigations and to increase resources for the department. The police department is funded through the general fund, so creating the district would help out in offsetting some of the costs of the department as sales tax revenue would fund the district.
With the district’s $550,000 budget for Fiscal Year 2024-25 the department could pay for officers; training and recruitment of police officers; training in investigation; technology, equipment and vehicle replacement, partner programs and crime prevention.
Getting the district underway will depend on voter’s approval, so the proposal to initiate a district officially will be on the November ballot.
Montgomery Police Chief Anthony Solomon characterized the budget as a projection, and it’s approval a formality previous to the voters’ decision.
If voters approve the budget, only the crime prevention board in conjunction with the Montgomery City Council can approve the use of the money.
