Community Impact reports that on February 27th the Conroe City Council will initiate a special meeting to hold a public hearing about the former Sam Houston Elementary School located at 601 Lewis Street. Their aim is the approval of a resolution backing a proposal for income-based housing at the site.
Back on the council’s February 21st workshop, they put a hold on passing a resolution of support for the project so they could hold a February 27th meeting.
At the workshop, Director of the Development for Overland Property Group, April Engstrom, gave a presentation on the income-based project proposal. A total of 79 general multifamily units—55 in the historic building and 24 in a new building for the project—was presented in her site plan for the endeavor.
Originally, the 601 Lewis Street property was planned to be a new performing arts center. At the Council’s December 14th meeting, they okayed a contract to let Overland Property Group buy the property they would use to develop an income-based housing project.
The city will allow the public to tour the Sam Houston Elementary School building from 8 AM to 4 PM on Monday, February 26th. Anyone who would like to take a tour of the school building is asked to call the Facilities Manager, Tammie Rushing. Her number is 936-522-3000.
Back at the February 21st workshop meeting, Councilmember Howard Wood talked about the city’s tough financial situation. He talked about Conroe’s Hyatt Regency Hotel changing “the landscape of this city.”
The Council’s special meeting comes up at 9:30 AM on February 27th at their 300 West Davis Street City Hall location in Conroe.
