The Western Region of the University Student Legal Services Association awarded Student Legal and Mediation Services at Sam Houston State University the J. Raymond Schiflett, III Award for Office of the Year at its annual conference in New Orleans in January 2024.
Director of the SHSU Student Legal and Mediation Services, Gene Roberts, said, “I am honored and humbled that our professional organization recognized us for the high-level services that our office provides for SHSU students.”
Nominated for this award by another university, the office of the year award honors outstanding training, advocacy initiatives, customer service and leadership roles.
Dean of Students Chelsea Smith explained that students turn to their services when they are facing their toughest challenges. This can come in the form of conflict resolution, preparing documents for personal needs and other matters requiring legal advice. Her praise of Roberts is echoed by campus leaders and students alike.
