Community Impact reports that the Conroe City Council is rescinding plans to construct a performing arts center at 601 West Lewis Street. The council approved a contract at their December 14th regular meeting to sell the property to Overland Property Group.
The property group will pay the City $4.3 million. Residential housing will be built on the site.
The agenda packet said the city will use the money from the sale to take care of bond proceeds. What’s left, will go for purposes approved by the city.
The property, acquired by the city in 2021, was the previous home to Conroe’s Sam Houston Elementary School. The idea for a new performing arts center was first under discussion by the council in 2019.
Community Impact previously reported that an architect was named for the performing arts project in October of 2021. The council heard two architectural feasibility studies last July. The estimated cost of the performing arts project was, in part, determined by the number of seats to be included. The cost would have been $70 million for a 1,600 seat facility and $190 million for a center with 2,000 seats.
