The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the City of Conroe, because of a recent tree clearing of a lot on West Davis, has been motivated to change their tree ordinance and stop residential property from being considered for commercial use for five years, if they are cleared of all trees.
On lots where trees are not removed, the ordinance does not apply.
This decision comes as the council reviewed and updated their tree ordinance. It’s been a debated issue for a several years.
As a result of Conroe residents raising their objections to clear-cutting of trees, back in August of 2022 councilmembers strengthened restrictions on developers who wanted to build in Conroe.
City Attorney Mike Garner said during a recent council workshop that some councilmembers asked if he would put together an amendment following the city’s staff finding out that residential property at 3600 West Davis was being offered for commercial use after its sale on September 11th.
What happened to the West Davis property was termed “unfortunate” by Councilman Harry Hardman. However, he felt the ordinance will let the city prevent similar occurrences in the future.
