The Courier of Montgomery County reports that in 2024 downtown Conroe’s concrete benches that, through art reflect Conroe and its past, will be undergoing an improvement.
In 2009, the Conroe Art Bench Project was finished as part of a project of the Texas Main Street Program done through the aid of the Conroe Live nonprofit to make the streets downtown more beautiful while providing a place to rest a while.
There are a total of 13 benches that have been painted by local area artists. They tell some of the story of Conroe’s history like the Crighton Theatre, the Conroe oil boom, the Montgomery County Fair, the Conroe Art League and more. The head of the project was Maggie Gutierrez from the Conroe Art League.
President of the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance, Judi Lanza, noticed that after 14 years the benches needed some TLC.
Not only do the benches reflect Conroe’s colorful past, but inside they provide access to electricity for downtown events.
With support from the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance, Lanza has undertaken the refurbishment of the benches. The nonprofit Alliance is made up of 21 Conroe arts organizations.
The repair of the benches runs around $52,000. Most of the money has been raised as of Monday.
Donations can be made to the website of the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance.
