The Courier of Montgomery County reports Walker County commissioners are exploring proposed regulations for street widths in Montgomery County for new areas of development.
The current street minimum width is 22 feet. Assistant County Engineer Dan Wilds said the minimum street width being proposed is 28 feet.
At a Commissioners workshop Tuesday, Wilds outlined the guidelines for street widths.
He commented on the narrowness of some subdivision roads where people park their vehicles. He said the proposal was “to allow emergency vehicles to get through.” Wilds further commented that a fire truck is around ten feet in width.
Commissioners Noack and Riley passed along that the proposed width “is excessive.”
Noack said traffic is slowed by narrow streets.
Riley said the 24-foot-wide streets would receive his support.
County Fire Marshall Jimmy Williams pointed out that you cannot street park in a subdivision with a 22-foot road. According to Williams, 25 feet of “unobstructed” access is required by the fire code. He recommended streets 28 feet in width.
