The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the “good cause” exception outlined in Texas’ armed guard requirement for schools has been implemented by Conroe ISD in their efforts to have police officers for their campuses.
Information from the district says, although the state allocates funds to help implement the requirement, shortages in staffing have increased the difficulty for larger districts like Conroe ISD to adhere to the new law.
For a police officer for the district, the yearly starting pay is $50,363.
After the board’s executive session on Tuesday, they okayed a resolution that outlines their alternate plan for following the law.
School districts must have a school resource officer, or commissioned peace officer or district peace officer at every school when school is in session, according to the mandates of the new state law.
Since the department does not have enough officers to put one officer at each campus, some officers with Conroe ISD have been looking after multiple schools.
The complete new plan for the district was not released. However, how they will implement the requirement, was put forth in the resolution.
An officer will be provided by the district at each secondary campus. As they are available, officers will be provided at elementary and intermediate campuses, and the district will designate officers to campuses based in their proximity.
