HUNTSVILLE, TX (August 24, 2023) – Huntsville ISD shared additional information in an email communication to parents and guardians about the incident that took place today at Huntsville High School. As our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff, we appreciate your understanding and support throughout this situation.
Earlier today, the Huntsville Police Department received information from a 24-hour suicide hotline about a bomb threat targeting Huntsville High School. Huntsville High School immediately activated their emergency protocols and began the campus evacuation process in coordination with law enforcement. We addressed some key points that have come to light since initial communication:
Immediate Response: The Huntsville Police Department and other law enforcement agencies swiftly informed campus administration about the threat, leading to the prompt initiation of evacuation procedures.
Misinformation on Social Media: Unfortunately, some misinformation surfaced on social media during the evacuation. Fictitious posts claiming a shooting had occurred or due to hearing loud sounds caused some students to run, which is not in line with the safety protocols.
Thorough Campus Sweep: Law enforcement completed a comprehensive search of the campus and confirmed that there was no actual bomb or firearm on the premises. The incident appears to have been triggered by a hoax and exacerbated by false statements and rumors on social media.
Investigation: The Huntsville Police Department is actively investigating the source of the threat. If you have any information that could assist in this investigation, please report it to the appropriate authorities.
Support for Students: We understand this incident has been distressing for the students. To provide support, counselors will be available at the school to speak with students tomorrow morning. We want to ensure that our students have the opportunity to process their feelings and concerns.
