Working in tandem for positive results for the past 13 years, Sam Houston State University’s kinesiology program and the Special Education Department of Huntsville Independent School District have been focusing on HISD and SHSU students. The program’s joint effort, now under the direction of professor Min Kim, was originated by SHSU Professor Jose Santiago, along with Huntsville ISD coach and teacher, Jason Elliot.
Initially, in the Academic Community Engagement course, Adapted Physical Activity, the students enrolled start the semester by learning guidelines for aligning physical activities to the needs of students who have disabilities. Another part of the process involves bussing HISD students to the SHSU Recreational Sports Center. At the Center, SHSU kinesiology students work with the students to improve their fitness, motor and social skills.
