Community Impact reports that a groundbreaking ceremony was held by Conroe officials late last week for the Oscar Johnson Jr. Community Center.
The ceremony featured comments from the wife of the late Oscar Johnson Jr., Ruby Johnson; Mayor Jody Czajkoski; retiree from Conroe’s Park and Recreation Department, Rob Hamilton; President of Burditt Land, Charles Burditt and President of Brookstone Construction, Jerry Stovall.
As of yet, there’s no projected opening date for the community Center.
According to a previous study in 2014, the center saw a 185 percent increase in visitors from 2008-09 to 2013-14. Because of that, Conroe officials decided to construct a center near Foster Drive on land the city purchased.
According to previous reporting, in December of 2021 $35 million was approved for the new facility. The 87,000 square foot center will feature child care areas, a fitness center and a space that will provide room for 300 people.
