This is Juneteenth. It is a federal holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The celebration takes place on the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Granger announcing freedom for slaves in Texas back on June 19. 1865. It became a federal holiday in 2021.
In Huntsville, the Museum of African and African American Art History and Culture is open today 1 to 2 PM with no admission charge at 14th Street and University Avenue.
The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas waives day-use fees at recreation sites on June 19 for Juneteenth.
Locally, day-use fees will be waived at Sam Houston National Forest: Cagle Boat Ramp and Scotts Ridge Boat Ramp.
