Community Impact reports that at a May 16 meeting of Conroe ISD, Assistant Superintendent of Operations Chris McCord told trustees that in August it is likely school overcapacity will increase in the district.
The CISD Board Planning Committee met in March to look ahead to the needs for a possible bond referendum that could be held in November. Community Impact had reported earlier that in the district 67 schools were operating at an average capacity of 102 percent.
According to McCord, in 2023 the projected enrollment in the district is expected to reach over 73,000.
At the meeting, McCord passed along the reasons for the capacity impact on space in schools as:
-The rate of change in the growing student population.
-Lack of ability to locate flexible programs at schools with available rooms.
-The rise in the number of students being served by social education programs that go over overall growth.
–Extra programs in schools.
The district has responded to the growth in the past by putting up portable class room buildings.
McCord said, “ We, and I, are concerned about reaching a place where we no longer have space to physically put a portable building on that site.” In August, some schools will receive portable buildings.
