The Courier of Montgomery County reports that on Thursday the Conroe City Council agreed to put in motion a grant application to TxDOT for a pedestrian and bicyclist path between Sgt. Ed Holcomb Boulevard from FM 2854 to Loop 336 and Old Magnolia Road to Kasmiersky Park.
A six million dollar state grant would help fund the project. If approved, the City of Conroe would be required to pay a 20 percent match of $1.2 million.
The council voted 3 to 2 in favor of the grant. The two opposing votes were from Howard Wood and Marsha Porter. Councilmember Wood said, “There are some other projects in the city, and my mind is going more on the east side of Conroe.” He added, “Is there a better way to spend taxpayer funds instead of this project?”
City Engineer Chris Bogert said the pathway project had already entailed concept planning and only a couple pieces of property would need to be acquired by the city. He said TxDOT had requested “shovel-ready” projects.
He also said in the fall the council would have the opportunity to talk about whether they want to go ahead with the project. He also passed along that if the grant application is approved by TxDOT, City engineering would make a submission of the project for funding in 2024.
