The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the City of Conroe is open to suggestions from the public for the enhancement of Owen Park. Located on Owen Drive close to the San Jacinto River and the previous site of the Conroe YMCA, the 110 acre park offers outdoor fun in the form of a fishing pond, hiking trails, a picnic pavilion, restrooms, a covered basketball court and an off-leash dog area.
You can get to their public survey by going to cityofconroe.org and then entering “Owen Park Survey” in the search box.
Back in 2022, the city was given a grant from the National Park Services Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program. This program helps communities in their efforts to create their conservation and recreation areas by providing experts who are pros in the fields of community planning, landscape architecture and other design fields.
Conroe director of parks and recreation Mike Riggens said, “It’s been a part of our master plan to put something on the west side outdoor space as well as indoor space, and this fit right into that.”
The City purchased the land and building in August of 2021 for $2.5 million. By January of 2023, the new Westside Recreation Center and Owen Park was opened. The center offers 30,000 square feet of athletic amenities.
