March is Women’s History Month, and we continue to celebrate the dedication of women worldwide to help others and achieve in all fields of endeavor.
On the Today at Sam website, journalist Mikah Boyd points out regarding women at SHSU:
In 1879, Emma Moore Barrett was the first student to enroll at Sam Houston Normal Institute.
In 1965, hired as a librarian, Jasper Sanford became the first African-American faculty member.
In 1972, Bettye Weatherall was the first African-American female faculty member.
In 1976 Audrey Guerrant was the first woman named distinguished alumni.
In 1977, Karen Lindsey was the first female commissioned through the ROTC program.
In 1980, Annabel Lopez became the first African American Homecoming Queen.
In 2001, at 85, Laura Thresher Johnston became the oldest graduate.
In 2002, Genevieve Brown became the first female academic dean.
In 2010, Dana Gibson Hoyt became the first female president.
In 2017, Lindsay Glicksberg became the first woman in the nation to graduate with a PhD in forensic science.
In 2018, Jill Sharp Vaughn became the first woman named to the Texas Bankers Hall of Fame.
